There are some things social media has improved though. People who used to have no way to discuss certain topics can now find others with completely different experiences.

The problem is that exposure does not automatically create understanding.

Meeting different viewpoints only helps if people are willing to listen rather than just waiting for their turn to attack.

Online arguments also have a strange memory problem. Someone can make one poor comment years ago and it can be brought up forever.

Real conversations usually allow people to change their minds and grow.

The internet sometimes treats changing your opinion as weakness when it should be seen as learning.

The best discussions I have seen online usually have one thing in common: people are curious. They ask why someone thinks differently instead of immediately assuming the worst.

Curiosity is probably the missing ingredient in many arguments.

It is harder to be angry at someone once you understand where they are coming from.
