Most Americans say Big Tech has too much sway over AI policy in Washington

[Katie8]

New polling from the Tech Oversight Project and Morning Consult found roughly 6 in 10 US voters believe technology companies wield too much influence in Washington, with 54 percent saying the Trump administration is too close to Big Tech and often prioritizes its interests, and 49 percent believing major tech companies benefit most from the administration's AI policies specifically. Tech Oversight Project executive director Sacha Haworth said Big Tech giants spent hundreds of millions funding Trump's campaign apparatus, and that cozy relationship is now catching up with him politically

The administration has pushed a broadly deregulatory AI agenda, including an executive order creating a task force to challenge state AI regulations the administration considers overly burdensome, and restricting broadband funding for states with AI rules deemed too restrictive. Despite this federal push toward preemption, the polling found 57 percent of respondents actually support states retaining the ability to pass their own AI regulations addressing local concerns, while just 24 percent favor prohibiting states from legislating on AI to avoid a patchwork of differing rules

Beyond the politics specifically, respondents expressed genuinely broad concern about AI's broader effects, with 69 percent expecting it to eliminate or reduce job opportunities, 45 percent believing it will make the economy worse overall, and 51 percent expecting it to worsen the quality of public discourse. Curious what people think this specific gap between federal deregulatory policy and public preference for state-level AI oversight actually reveals, does it suggest a genuine disconnect between industry lobbying influence and voter sentiment, or is public opinion here softer and more malleable than these specific poll numbers suggest

The gap between federal deregulatory push and genuine public support for state level AI rules is the most telling finding here, suggests policy is currently tracking industry preference more closely than actual voter sentiment on this specific issue

69 percent expecting AI to eliminate or reduce job opportunities is a genuinely striking level of public pessimism, that's a much starker number than the more measured jobs apocalypse postponed narrative that's dominated recent economic coverage

Worth remembering campaign finance and access don't automatically translate into policy outcomes that match donor preferences perfectly, but this specific poll does suggest voters perceive a fairly direct connection between the two right now

This kind of polling data matters most as a potential midterm campaign issue, if data center backlash and AI policy specifically become genuine electoral flashpoints, this level of voter skepticism gives challengers real ammunition to use

[Scholes22]

51 percent expecting AI to worsen public discourse quality is a genuinely broad concern that extends well beyond the usual jobs and safety framing that dominates most AI policy conversations
