Feels inevitable at this point. We spent years opening apps and now apps are opening assistants inside themselves. Email, docs, browsers, even note apps are becoming one giant prompt box with extra buttons.

Examples are everywhere already:
  • Writing suggestions in office suites
  • Code copilots inside IDEs
  • AI summaries in browsers
  • Photo cleanup and generation in gallery apps
  • Meeting transcription and action items
The weird part is I still catch myself doing things manually because I don't trust the output enough to fully hand over control.

Asking an assistant to export a PDF feels slower than clicking Export. Not every interaction becomes better when turned into language.

The demand numbers are wild, but building chips isn't like opening another coffee shop. New companies can appear, sure, yet they still need fabrication capacity, packaging, skilled engineers, and years of experience.

That's why the shortages don't surprise me. Throwing money at the problem only solves part of it when every step in the supply chain is already running flat out.

Still, competition is healthy. If more players can carve out specialized niches instead of trying to copy the market leaders, everyone benefits.

The only certainty seems to be that AI isn't getting less hungry for compute anytime soon. :)

Feels like every tech boom reaches the point where someone says, "There's no way demand can keep growing." Then reality laughs and demand doubles again.

What makes this different is that memory, packaging, and networking all have to scale together. A faster accelerator doesn't help much if something else becomes the bottleneck.

Wouldn't be surprised if a few startups come out of nowhere with clever ideas, but matching the production volume of the established giants is another story entirely.

By the time newcomers catch up, the goalposts may have moved again. ;)

Part of me agrees that alternatives will emerge, but there's also the question of whether they'll be compatible with the software ecosystem everyone already relies on.

Great hardware is only half the battle. Developers usually stick with platforms that have mature tools, libraries, and support. That's a huge advantage that's difficult to build overnight.

The race almost reminds me of game consoles. The fastest hardware doesn't always win if nobody wants to develop for it.

Another angle is whether companies are buying because they need the hardware today or because they're worried they won't be able to get it tomorrow.

Fear of shortages can create even more shortages. We've seen that happen in other industries where everyone orders extra "just in case," making the situation look even tighter than it already is.
